Tree Pruning and Tree Thinning in the Montreal area

What is tree pruning?

Thinning, also known as pruning, consists of cutting dead, weakened, broken, diseased or detrimental branches. We use pruning techniques that minimize impact on the structure of the tree, so its sap is more easily directed towards its healthy parts.

Why prune or thin a tree?

There are several reasons for pruning or thinning a tree.

  • Sick tree
  • Infected tree
  • Unhealthy tree
  • Infrastructure clearance
  • Maintaining the health and strength of the branches
  • Aesthetics

Most of the time, a tree is pruned or trimmed because its branches rub together, causing injuries that can become a breeding ground for insects, fungi and disease. When branches are weakened, they can easily break and fall on your house, shed, power lines or even worse, on a human being. It’s important to have your tree pruned, before it’s too late.

It’s also advisable to prune or trim a tree to thin it out, so it doesn’t harm the vegetation below.

When to prune or trim a tree?

Among the factors that determine the best time to prune your tree, you should consider the reason for pruning and the type of tree to be pruned. Pruning can be carried out in both summer and winter, except in extreme cold or heat.

Certain types of trees have periods when you should avoid pruning. For example, Maples shouldn’t be pruned in the spring.

How often should a tree be pruned or trimmed?

For younger trees and fruit pruning, we recommend 2 year intervals. For large trees, pruning should take place every 3 to 5 years. We’ll take the opportunity to conduct a height assessment of the tree structure during our visit.

How many branches need to be removed?

As a general rule, no more than 20% to 30% of the foliage should be removed from the tree in order not to cause shock. This exact percentage will vary according to specific needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prune my own tree?

You can, but we don't recommend it. Unprofessional pruning can damage or even kill your tree. Several important aspects must be taken into account, including the angle and size of the cut. Your tree can be damaged with inappropriate equipment plus, you could injure yourself by attempting the climb.

Do we need to apply a product on the cut branches?

In earlier times, there was a technique where you’d apply some type of glue or paste to the cut branches, in order to help with healing. This method is no longer used, because it retains moisture and causes rot. Today, when a branch is cut, it’s simply left to dry and heal naturally.
